The founding of Uniting People (UP)

Below you will find the original call for our 1st historic meeting - "UNITING PROGRESSIVES for Peace, Equality, Full Employment, Universal Health Care and Environmental Protection" - on May 19th 2013 (the 88th anniversary of the birthday of Malcolm X).

Dear Friends and fellow activists,

As you read these lines, nearly 1 in 4 American children are living in poverty in the richest country in the world. Millions of families have been – and are being – thrown out of their homes. Tent cities are popping up around all of the major urban areas in the United States. And millions of Americans go bankrupt every year because of health problems that would be covered by the health care programs in other industrialized countries.

As a nation and as one planet, we are facing widespread challenges from economic to ecological, including mass unemployment, climate change, nuclear disasters, fracking, police brutality, crowded prisons, eroding social services, crumbling infrastructure, and much more. Yet unlimited corporate power focuses only on generating profits, not on solving problems.

Meanwhile, the Obama regime - like the Bush regime before it - is spending over 57% of the discretionary budget on military spending, wars and over 800 costly overseas military bases.

As is now obvious to millions of people, the Democratic and Republican Parties are owned lock, stock and barrel by the ultra-rich who control our economy and government (and mass media). In order to advance the real interests of the working people of our country, we need you to assist in expanding an alliance to fight for our own needs.

MOBILIZE, ORGANIZE, UNITE

To the north, Canadians have shown greater flexibility in affecting the policies of their own government through existing left and center-left parties, and the new Quebec Solidaire. Bolivia and Venezuela offer stirring examples of successful electoral organizing for genuine change. People in other countries as well are uniting to improve living standards. Our own conditions are different, and we cannot closely follow another model, but all of them can offer us useful pointers.

Imagine what progressives in the U.S. could do if we learn to work together in a multi-tendency left-progressive coalition! We wouldn't just be complaining about the Democratic Party posing as the lesser of 2 evils between the 2 corporate war parties. With ballot access across the country, we will be capable of presenting a credible political alternative to American voters.

This year, political activists are building a new progressive alliance with the objective of uniting people for meaningful change. The Peace and Freedom Party, the Justice Party and the Party for Socialism and Liberation have been working together for this past year.

We are calling on activists from Ralph Nader’s citizens’ networks, disgruntled members from Progressive Democrats of America, the Green Party, organizations on the Left, Socialists, and numerous Independent progressives working inside different social movements.

Many of us have also been working together with activists in such state-based parties as Oregon Progressive Party, New Mexico Independent Party, Open Progressive Party of Minnesota, and the Independent Party of Connecticut.

UNITY IS STRENGTH

It is time to build a broad-ranging COALITION to mobilize the American people around a program of Peace, Equality, Full Employment, Universal Health Care and Environmental Protection.

We need to develop an innovative ELECTORAL STRATEGY so progressives can play a determining role in forging public policy.

We are focused on ballot access in a dozen states in 2014 (and, eventually, in all states). We seek to achieve ballot status and run candidates for federal, state and local office. To this end, we need activists such as you. We need your involvement, your ideas, your voices, and your contacts - your feet on the ground, your telephones in hand, your door-to-door campaigning skills.

We hope to meet with you on the “UNITING PROGRESSIVES” conference call on Sunday, MAY 19 @ 4:00 pm EDT to discuss how we can work together. The agenda of this first national conference call will focus on plans to expand alliance-building efforts throughout the U.S., in order to provide a more viable voice for movements that speak to the aspirations of many millions of people who feel disenfranchised by the current system. We are grassroots organizations, uniting to facilitate the needs of working class Americans.
